Three times, now I have visited the Gallery, Welsh Art at Ffin y Parc, Llanrwst.

The house and 14 acre grounds have been lovingly renovated by partners Ralph Sanders and Roland Powell into an expansive art gallery and luxury seven bedroom country house hotel, with plans for a restaurant and tearoom in the near future.

“The idea for Ffin-y-Parc was born three years ago when we came to see a sad and lonely old house full of bats,” explained Ralph, 38. “It was rapidly falling into disrepair and disappearing behind a curtain of brambles and ivy.”

Since November 2007, Ralph and Rowland, 41 – a former Welsh actor – have been slowly restoring the house and its 14 acres of grounds situated within Snowdonia National Park. Driving up the avenue lined with bluebells, I was greeted by the lovely old house, cottages, and a reclaimed walled garden. The dogs Rothko and Archie came ambling out to greet me, and Ralph too, welcoming me into the Gallery.

This is my third visit. The first being a tour of the house and grounds, and seeing the collection of Welsh Art, not yet hung! The second visit, the Private View of the ‘The First Show’. The art work now hung, showcased the collection, from room to room, and on up the stairs. The gallery spacious and light does the work justice, from Shani Rhys James work hung high on the landing to Danny Markey’s jewel like townscapes at the entrance.

The Gallery was full of guests that evening, the piano music filling the lounge where the vast Peter Prendergast is hung, a testament to this great artist. Through the rooms I went, enjoying this eclectic mix of important works. Slightly overawed, I wandered out into the garden, and met with other Welsh artists, Jeremy Yates RCA, David Grosvenor and more.

This third visit, quiet, with Ralph and coffee, we view the work again, John Piper a favorite in the conservatory, and Mary Lloyd Jones’ painting in the hallway. We talk of the forthcoming events, the Solo Exhibition, THE LAND by Lisa Carter, over 40 new works, dramatic landscapes, from 10 June to 24 July.

So I will visit again!

Ralph told me, “I am very passionate about supporting and showcasing up-and-coming Welsh artists and every month the gallery will preview a different artist’s work, including paintings and ceramics which visitors will be able to view and buy.”

Cambridge Art For Autism Raised over £1800!

The Cambridge Art For Autism exhibition & fund-raising event took place in Cambridge last Thursday, to raise funds and awareness for the National Autistic Society. The exhibition featured several OC Artist members and raised over £1800 for NAS.

Wales, and my work

Each day I am greeted by the history, culture, the landscape and stories of Wales. Each waking moment I am ingesting these images, words, memories and moments.

And so, as I work the ideas and thoughts from this immersion leak out into the painting and drawing. How can it not?

The peace and solitude of my old house, creates a private place for me to work, to reveal what is within and without. This privacy gives me strength and courage to speak out, without embarrassment and fear.

I find interest in local places, Llyn Celyn, Slate fences, the Power House at Trawsfynydd. These images mix with personal feelings, and become one. I listen to the people, their thoughts and opinions, and find that then the work will take on new direction, and challenges.

The work is affected by new landscapes so go to small places to refresh, and regenerate the work. I see the swallows and walk the Red Bog in Tregaron . I go to Pembrokeshire, to the beaches, and collect stones and sea washed glass and pottery…………..

I walk in the Welsh landscape and think, and balance the inside with that outside.

I know that my work is as it is, from being here. It is earthy, ancient, and enclosed, with the marks of the making.

Wales is now my home, and my work.

The box of work from New York will be opened, and quietly all the artwork will be installed, whilst the names of the artists will be written in ‘The Book of the Living’

Sonja Benskin Mesher RCA 'The Chair and a Book About Death', a film about the working practice of the artist, an insight into her creative process and her involvement with the international phenomenon of A Book About Death. 34 min.

Rozanne Hawksley 'Offerings', a film looking at the artists exhibition last year at Ruthin Craft Centre and an interview with her in her attic studio giving an insight into her creative process as she prepares new work. 35 min.

'Self: self-portraits from around the world'

In 2009, we launched a free-to-enter online competition calling for self-portraits in any format.

The quantity, diversity and quality of the response we received from Artists around the world far surpassed our expectations, prompting the development of this book. Visual Artist & Writer Craig Kerrecoe, founder of Ovenden Contemporary, has compiled over 100 of the self-portraits submitted to the competition, including paintings, photography, digital art, sketches, prints and sculpture from artists around the world.

This gorgeous book contains self-portraits by Jonny Briggs, John Lyons (winner of the Windrush Arts Achiever Of The Year Award in 2003), Kaine Kulczak, Paula MacArthur (winner of the John Player Portrait Awards in 1989), Taryn Wells and N.R. Arton (winner of the Apthorp Award in 1998), amongst many other fantastic Artists.

Craig Kerrecoe says in the book's introduction, "Irrespective of the location of the contributing Artist, the diversity of the images submitted was impressive. Whilst the majority of entries were either paintings or photography, there were many sketches, prints and sculptural pieces, as well as a handful of short films.

"As you’d expect, most of the images could be considered traditional self-portaits, in that they feature a ‘head and shoulders’representation of the Artist, although the ‘professional’ portrait, where the Artist is depicted at work, scarcely featured. Artists these days, those that responded to our ‘call for art’ at least, seem far more interested in personal portraits, intended to reveal moral or psychological features of the individual.

Several of the Artists responded with portraits of people other than themselves, usually their partners. I find the concept of a self-portrait that doesn’t feature the artist something of a challenge. Is the Artist saying that they do not exist, other than when reflected in their significant other? Is this an attempt to flatter, a display of true love or an indication of low self-esteem? Interesting...

Pushing this concept of ‘self as others’ further, one of the responding Artists, Jonny Briggs, creates images that feature his parents, or himself dressed as his parents. His work is a deliberate subversion of paternal relationships and an exploration of the effects of those relationships on his own development.

Many Artists use the self-portrait as a means to protest some injustice they feel has been done to them, either personally, politically or socially, and others prefer to fantasize about who they wish they were, if only reality didn’t get in the way."

Craig Kerrecoe talks to the Connecticut-based Visual Artist Barbara J. Lloyd about fender-benders, artist's block and people-watching... in that order!

CK: What made you become an artist Barbara?

BL: As I was growing up, art was the only thing that seemed to give me an identity of my own. The school I attended didn’t even offer art classes in the curriculum!

CK: No art at school? That's unusual- I would have thought art was a basic part of all western school curriculums. How did you get into it then?

BL: Well, somehow, when I was young I got my hands on a set of pastels and started doing portraits. It made me feel good about myself.

CK: Your images are constructed using different processes but what inspires you to create an image in the first place?

BL: I get inspiration from ordinary situations. Somehow, they strike a chord in my subconscious and stubbornly stick there until I pry them out with paint, a camera or another tool.

Holocaust Memorial Day

For Immediate Release January 27 2010 marks the 65th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz concentration camp and Holocaust Memorial Day 2010. Shrewsbury Action Against Racism is sponsoring two art based events to mark the anniversary. Shropshire Legacy of Hope has employed the work of over twenty artists in an effort to help our community to remember the mistakes of the past and to create hope for the future. On January 27, at noon, in the Market Square in Shrewsbury, actors will be creating a human statue on the themes of Fear, Anguish and Hope inspired by the work of German artist Kathe Kolliwitz. Cathie Woodbury, Shropshire community artist, says that too many people believe that the Holocaust only affected Jews. In fact, she reminds us, there were millions of Slavs, gypsies, trade unionists, political opponents, people of colour, homosexuals and mentally and physically disabled also targeted. Mike Layward will also be in the square performing The Wandering Jew, a piece connected to the artwork that he has produced for the gallery in Butcher's Row. The human statue will be followed by a reading of Kaddish, the traditional Jewish prayer for the dead, by the cast and assembled audience. Two galleries in Shrewsbury are exhibiting works of art created by local artists to commemorate this event. The Shropshire Legacy of Hope Gallery, located in Butcher's Row 16-17 has been kindly donated for the one day gallery, by Simon Beedles of Barber's Commercial Lettings. Art work by local artists Kieth Ashford, Sonja Beskin Mesher ( recently honored as a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy), Eleanor Watkins, Chris Terrell, and Mike Layward will be featured as well as other artists from DASh. The gallery will be open from 10-4pm on January 27. The Hive Gallery, located on Belmont Street, is featuring a Cultural Diversity exhibition from late January to early February. Lions of Bath

A giant pride of 100 individually decorated, life-size lion sculptures, will be taking up residence in and around the World Heritage City of Bath from May to October 2010 in a colourful cultural event to raise funds for local charities and bring a smile to the faces of residents and visitors alike.

The lion sculptures, sponsored by businesses, local communities and individuals, will be decorated by artists and craftspeople using their skill and imagination to produce eye-catching artworks from the beautiful to the bizarre. At the end of the summer all of the lions will be auctioned for charity to end their days as fabulous works of art in offices, homes and gardens.

Sonja Benskin Mesher RCA has just taken delivery of Llewelyn, ready to paint and be a part of this public art project.

Last year Sonja painted Carmina, a King Bladud's Pig, that was auctioned for £7, 000!

Internal Documents on View at The Writers Place

The Writers Place is pleased to be showing Internal Documents, a display of semi-private and personal documents in the form of sketchbooks, journals and diaries generously on loan from local, national and international artists and writers. The opening reception will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2010, 6-9 pm. The exhibition continues through to March 27.

Internal Documents is an intimate look at information normally intended to remain personal or in limited circulation. This display of over thirty books shows the variability of the medium; from notations and listings of daily events, doodles, preparatory drawings for future projects and inner explorations into the human psyche. The sketchbooks, journals and diaries in the exhibition have been hung butterflied, allowing visitors to peek at two pages a week.

Art Application (Rejected by Axis.org!)

A couple of months back I applied to axisweb.org. Axisweb seems to be a good way to get exposure for art. Unfortunately Julian Lister the "Directory Coordinator" rejected my application without giving any useful feedback. Ho hum. If anybody out there spots any glaring errors or reasons why you think my application failed, I'd be happy to hear any constructive advice from you!

Anyhow I though it would be a useful insight to publish the application text and images for anyone interested in what I am trying to achieve with my assemblage "sculptures".

Supporting Statement

At what point are you in your career?
I still regard myself to be early career. I started painting and sculpting in earnest five years ago after a near-fatal car accident. I am now a professional landscape painter and sculptor.

Have you established a national or international profile?
I have developed a national UK profile. My sculptures have been to London “Liberte d'Expression” exhibition and I recently gained international recognition by making the shortlist (65 out 5,000) for the London International Creative Competition.

How do you position your practice in relation to wider developments in contemporary art?
From a formal perspective my sculptures are Assemblage art. I particularly admire the work of Louise Nevelson. There is a strong conceptual element to my sculpture, often dealing with the reality of the human body and symbiotic relationship between mind and body. My approach to art is modernist in that I question the old certainties but use contemporary materials that relate to the modern world. I recognise the influence of the auteur David Cronenberg, as we share a reality grounded in the physical processes of the body.

What is distinctive about your work?
I use non-traditional materials such as plastic tubing and circuit boards, combining them in an unfamiliar way. The materials are modern but the questions arising are age-old, e.g: mind vs. body. Does consciousness disappear when the body stops? Is there a soul?

How has your work progressed over recent years?
I started by embedding electronic components into the surfaces of a canvas. From there my work has become more intricate and planned. I now carefully select materials and develop ideas in tandem, usually around contemporary themes, e.g.: “Home Bio-Analyser” is an imagined device that takes blood samples, iris measurements and ID-card readings. Nowadays I blend technological, biological and political ideas into the work as it develops.

What do you hope to gain from joining Axis?
I would like to develop connections with galleries to display my work at exhibitions. I am also interested in selling for public display or to collectors that have an understanding of my work.

Artist Statement
My bio-electronic sculptures are meditations on medicine, technology, mortality and my strongly held rational atheist ideas. Taking electronic components and boards from disused or deliberately destroyed electronic devices my Assemblage art approach is combined with what I describe as hand crafted pseudo-biological objects made from acrylic paint, fabric and medical tubing. It is through this combination of biology and technology that I explore ideas around my relationship with technology and the processes of living including ageing and decay, using the metaphor of the body as a machine. In a way the construction of these items is catharsis and a tool for my personal acceptance of the natural biological processes beyond my control.

I've been asked to do a multi-layer stencil of Peterborough and after tinkering with a few photos I've decided this is the one to do. I like how it covers all aspects of the city from the office blocks to the CCTV camera and all that's inbetween. It'll be a complex job but I'm looking forward to doing it.

This is a preview I've knocked together in Photoshop of how it will look. Next step is to separate the layers and print them off.

Sonja Benskin Mesher from Llanelltyd near Dolgellau is the only artist from Wales selected for the International Drawing Competition in Wroclaw, Poland.

Only two artists from the UK were selected!

Shroud Haemorrhage

Shroud Haemorrhage is my largest abstract to date. The layers in this picture have been built up over several months. Paint has been applied and then scraped off when dried. There is texture to the final painting in places. The painting is about the non-seperation of body and mind and how the idea of self is a function of the physical body. Despite this being a fundamentally athiest painting, "shroud" like areas of the canvas were revealed as I worked on them and and as I liked these aesthetically I left them in.

The Young Carers art exhibition at Morley Court closed today with several pieces sold throughout and a burst of activity on the final day. Special thanks have to go out to all the artists that donated and everyone who came to have a look at the work on display.

It's now time to look forward to the first Young Carers art exhibition open to the general public. This event will be happening at the Peterborough Key Theatre from the 25th August and last for 2 weeks. The preview night on the 24th August is invitation only and will feature complimentary wine and nibbles as well as first opportunity to select your favourite piece of art. If you'd like to attend please get in touch as numbers are limited.

Peterborough Young Carers Charity Art Exhibition

On Wednesday 13th May I had a quick meeting with the Peterborough Young Carers Project Coordinator Janine Baxter. It was great to be able to update her on the progress that has been made over the past few months. I was able to tell her that the PYC art pool now has 12 pieces of art in it from Lex, Funky Red Dog, Nick Cain, Jason Walton, My Dog Sighs, Sherrie Tate, Ytak, Lynne Lamb and Ysbryd with a further 8 pieces in the post from Craig Kerrecoe, Plura Bella, Mr. Burning, >tony< and Dogtired. Thanks to all of you that have donated your art recently, I can tell you that Janine was very excited not only at the prospect at raising money for the charity but also because it will give her the opportunity to bring some of the young carers to the exhibition. I was also able to let Janine know that the Key Theatre had agreed to host the Young Carers exhibition later in the year, this is a great venue and will really help to promote both the charity and the artists donating.

It's getting late but it's not too late if you want to donate to the exhibition. I know there are a lot more of you out there who want to help or have agreed to help out but so far have not been able to send anything in. Please, please get it in as soon as possible because I'd like to exhibit as much as possible at the first exhibition starting on the 22nd June.

We installed the new solo exhibition by John Lyons this morning at Needhams Restaurant & Art Gallery in Witchford, Cambridgeshire. The exhibition is called 'Chimera: Myth & Colour' and marks the first solo exhibition of his work since his exhibition at Three Cups Gallery in Ely in 2005.

Needhams Open Art Exhibition- Public Vote Winner!

The Finalist's Exhibition for the Needhams Open Art Competition 2009 finished yesterday. We received a good deal of feedback regarding the featured work from visitors to the building- Andrea Rowbotham's large paintings in the Lounge Bar were very popular with guests apparently.

We ran a public vote for the exhibition, giving diners an opportunity to vote for their favourite piece. We've counted the votes this morning and are pleased to announce that we have a tie for winner of the Public Vote- both Marc Allen for 'Light Plays: Untitled C' (above) and Georgina Vinsun for 'Debbie' (below) received exactly the same amount of votes throughout the exhibition. Congratulations to Marc & Georgina!

A few words about J.G.Ballard (who died yesterday)

I first discovered J.G.Ballard when I bought a battered second-hand copy of Hi-Rise from a bookshop many years ago. The book was unlike anything I had ever read, the understandable immortailty of the characters was a shock to the system, cognitive dissonance from the written page, this was new and exciting! This lead to me reading many other Ballard books over the years, the highlight probably being Crash, which I still don’t understand but enjoy unlocking the puzzle a little bit more everytime I read it. Just reading about the people that he influenced has been an additional bonus to me, this has opened opened new worlds of art, books and music. The Ballard community is a wonderful framework of sanity to ground myself against in an increasingly crazy world, one that he predicted through his books. Everytime I’m affronted by celebrity “news”, survellience and new consumer fetish cults I have a group of people to turn to who are equally bemused and angry. To new readers if you asked me what book to read first, I would say his autobiography, Miracles of Life (2008). From this gripping, warm and honest book you will get a true measure of the man that was J.G.Ballard.

"When you consider one of John's paintings, you are intrigued and repelled in equal measure, as you are forced to acknowledge your own unique reaction to such powerful imagery."

The Caribbean-born Artist John Lyons often relies upon the rich vernacular folklore and mythology of his homeland to conjure up images of such immense power that you can hardly take your eyes off them. Lyons describes his work as an 'ambivalent pleasure' and a 'playful dialogue' but they are much more than that. Intuitive and breathtaking, courageous and disturbing- when you consider a painting such as 'Birth Of Soucoyant' or 'Folklore Convention' you are intrigued and repelled in equal measure, as you are forced to acknowledge your own unique reaction to such powerful imagery.
An Artist with an incredible career behind him, Lyons has considerable achievements in visual arts, curating, poetry, teaching, adjudication and he was even a Purchaser for the Arts Council National Collection in the eighties. He co-founded the Hourglass Studio Gallery in Hebden Bridge in Yorkshire and remains a board member to this day. He is also one of three judges for the inaugural Needhams Open Art Competition 2009.

We are immensely proud to be exhibiting the work of an Artist of Lyon's skill and standing. 'Chimera' is the first solo exhibition in the Cambridgeshire region of work by John Lyons since his show at Three Cups Gallery in 2005. It will feature a fantastic selection of his oil paintings, watercolours, pastels and woodcut prints.

Peterborough Yound Carers Charity Art Exhibition- Call For Art!

WHO ARE YOUNG CARERS?

Young Carers are children and young people under the age of 18 whose lives are in some way restricted because of the need to take responsibility for the care of a person. This person may be ill, have a disability, be experiencing mental distress or affected by substance abuse or HIV/AIDS.

A young carer could be in any family and from any social or cultural background. Most are caring for a parent, commonly in a single parent family, but some may be taking responsibility for a grandparent, sibling or other family member. Some may be a primary carer, the only person providing care, but others, secondary carers, may share responsibilities with family members.

This is a call for artists with a conscience to contribute artwork to be sold at the Peterborough Young Carers Charity Art Exhibition between June 22nd and July 3rd 2009 at the Coca Cola Business Services Centre in Peterborough. All proceeds from the exhibition will go to the Peterborough Carers Centre charity.

Since autumn 2005, the charming Needhams Restaurant in Witchford, near the historic city of Ely in Cambridgeshire, has hosted a visual art exhibition programme specialising in and providing opportunities for new and emerging artists from around UK.

In the true spirit of the now well-established exhibition programme, the Needhams Open Art Competition was launched in 2008 to create an exciting opportunity for new and emerging visual artists from around the world, culminating in this exhibition of the shortlisted work in April/May 2009.

New Artist- Barbara J. Lloyd

Barbara J. Lloyd primarily uses photography, digital processes and collage techniques to create wonderfully colourful, atmospheric and often humorous images filled with whimsy, mystery and an intriguing surrealism.

She says, "Art opens a window into my mind, allowing pieces of my subconscious to escape onto the canvas, paper or whatever substrate I'm using to capture the elusive bits. It's the ordinary, utilitarian elements of life that inspire and challenge me to present them in a new and, hopefully, exciting way. If my art engages the viewer in a satisfying dialogue, I consider it a success”

Born in New Jersey, USA, Lloyd graduated from Kean University of New Jersey with a Fine Arts degree. A former art teacher and album cover designer, she now lives in Danbury, Connecticut and became a full-time artist sometime ago. Her artwork is currently being exhibited in the Upstream People Gallery, the American Juried Art Salon, and the Artist's Haven Gallery. She has just received a Special Recognition for two of her artworks in the Upstream People Gallery Juried Competition and her body of work was recently recognized by Mosaic Globe with a cash award.

These are the huge but very beautiful abstract paintings by Andrea Rowbotham that we failed to get to Needhams yesterday! 'Reaching Summit' and 'Summit Experience' are now safely installed in the Lounge Bar of the restaurant where all the guests and diners are welcomed with drinks and menus before being shown to their tables.

This pair of paintings look fantastic, we're sure you'll agree.

Janine Baxter coordinator of the project said “We have carried out a survey of young carers to find out what they want. It takes a great deal of courage for a Young Carer to identify themselves because they fear that if they ask for help their family will be broken up. We found that there was one major demand the children had. They want a childhood. We are going to use the survey to challenge every school, social worker, doctor, in the city to help them enjoy their youth.”

This is a call for artists to help support the young carers charity.

The Finalists Exhibition for the Needhams Open Art Competition 2009 was installed this morning (mostly!). It went reasonably well apart from the fact that we couldn't get two paintings by Andrea Rowbotham to the restaurant as they were too large to get in our car (a large SUV). We've arranged alternative transport for tomorrow and will post photographs tomorrow afternoon.

The striking painting above is called 'Rape of Ghia' by Esther Albone, now hanging in the conservatory.

The winning piece, 'Untitled 16' by Nash Francis, is also hanging in the conservatory.

You can hardly tell from these photos just how beautifully tactile this painting is. It's an abstract painting in the usual sense of the word but the materials Nash uses add an interesting dimension to his work- it's cold to the touch (which is odd) and the contrast between the flat matt of the white areas and the high gloss of the colours is very strong. The colours almost jump off the canvas. Congratulations to Nash Francis- the first Winner of the Needhams Open Art Competition 2009!

The piece on the left is called 'Blue Dream' by Daniel Young- it got the second highest number of points from the judges in the competition and is, therefore, our second place entry! Well done Daniel!

The piece on the right is called 'Untitled C' by Marc Allen. It's actually a photograph (not digitally edited in any way) and is printed onto aluminium sheet.

This is a portrait piece by Carol Tarn called 'Zoe'. It's very large and very striking!

This is the second piece selected for the exhibition by Nash Francis. It's called 'Untitled 7'.

New Member Coming Soon- Caroline Hall

We are close to finishing the profile of another new OC member- Caroline Hall, from Winchester. Caroline came to our attention with an excellent entry to the Needhams Open Art Competition, receiving a commendation from the judges.

Caroline completed a degree in Visual Art in 2005 with First Class Hons, and then a Masters in Fine Art in 2007. Since graduating she has exhibited throughout the UK and held her first solo London exhibition with degreeArt.com in November last year. She was a named finalist in the Chelsea International Fine Art Competition in New York which was judged by Manon Sloane and her work was subsequently featured in the arts magazine ARTisSpectrum 2008.

New Artist Member- Jason Walton

Jason Walton, a successful Graphic Designer based in London, creates vibrant digital images using illustration and photography, heavily influenced by his design training. A keen traveller, many of his images are derived from his travel photographs, edited into abstract forms. Alternatively, using Photoshop on his trusty Apple Mac, he will create cloissonist illustrations with thick black lines enclosing bright colours.

"...with digitally collaged images like 'Cockerels', you can see a desire to recreate, reform reality, turning random items into something else, something abstract."

Walton is inspired by images or photography that show texture, contrast, linearity and unusual perspectives or angles. He will often repeat an image to form a pattern and this, in itself, changes the quality of his images. He cites the British collage artist Richard Hamilton as one of his favourite artists and, with digitally collaged images like 'Cockerels', you can see a desire to recreate, reform reality, taking everyday, random items and turning them into something else, something abstract.
